Community classes FAQ

Questions, answered.

Is the class really free?

Yes. The class, the training, and your certification card are completely free. The only thing we ask for is a $10 seat reservation, which is refunded to you when you attend. You're not paying for the class, you're just holding your seat.

What is the $10 seat reservation?

When you register, you pay $10 to reserve one of 12 seats in the class. Think of it like a library hold, it tells us you're serious about coming so we can plan for exactly who's in the room. The moment you check in on class day, we refund it. Most students get it back the same day.

When do I get my $10 back?

Same day. Once you're checked in at class, our team processes your refund before you leave. It goes back to the card you paid with.

What happens if I don't show up?

We understand that life happens. But each class only has 12 seats, and when a seat goes unfilled, that's a spot someone else in the community couldn't use. Preparing for each student, materials, manikins, instructor time, takes real resources. So if you don't show up and don't cancel in advance, your $10 seat reservation becomes a donation that helps us keep offering these classes for free. We hope you'll join us next time.

What if I need to cancel?

Life comes up, we get it. If you cancel at least 48 hours before your class, you'll receive a full refund of your $10, no questions asked. Cancellations inside 48 hours can't be refunded, since it's too late to fill your seat. To cancel, reply to your confirmation email or contact us and we'll take care of it.

Can I give my seat to someone else?

Yes. If you can't make it, you're welcome to transfer your seat to a friend, family member, or neighbor, just make sure they're at least 12 years old. Let us know their name ahead of time if you can, or they can check in under your reservation on class day.

Do I need to register in advance?

Yes. Each class is limited to 12 students, so you'll need to reserve your seat online ahead of time. We can't guarantee space for walk-ins.

How many seats are available per class?

12. We keep classes small on purpose so every student gets real hands-on time with the equipment and personal attention from the instructor.

How do I sign up?

Visit the class listing on this page, pick your date, and click "Reserve your seat." You'll check out through our secure registration page, pay the $10 seat reservation, and receive a confirmation email with a QR code. Bring that QR code (on your phone is fine) to class for check-in.

What time should I arrive?

Please arrive 15 minutes before your class start time so we can check everyone in and start on schedule. Each class listing shows the exact date, time, and library location.

How long is the class?

About 3 hours, including hands-on practice.

Do I get a certification card?

Yes. When you complete the class, you'll receive an official certification card the same day, free. Our instructors are certified by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Red Cross.

Who teaches the classes?

Our instructors are certified by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Red Cross, and they're experienced at teaching everyday people, no medical background needed.

What do I need to bring?

Just yourself. We provide all the training materials and equipment. Wear something comfortable, you'll be kneeling and practicing on the floor.

Is there an age requirement?

Students must be at least 12 years old.

Where are classes held?

At PGCMLS library branches across the DMV. Each class listing shows the exact branch and address.

How do I know the class is really happening?

Every class listed on this page is confirmed. If a class ever needs to be rescheduled, we'll email everyone who's registered right away. This page is always the most up-to-date source, if it's listed here, it's on.

Can you bring a class to my neighborhood?

We'd love to. We're starting with PGCMLS libraries and expanding based on demand. Sign up for notifications and tell us where you are, it helps us decide where to go next.

What if the class I want is full?

Join the notification list and you'll be the first to know when new dates open. With only 12 seats per class, popular dates fill fast.

How do I check in on class day?

Show the QR code from your confirmation email at the door (your phone screen works). Our team will scan it, check you off, and process your $10 refund during class.
